When choosing a large OTR solid tire, there are generally two types to choose from:
1. Solid OTR tires
2. Molded solid tires
Solid OTR tires offer 3 key benefits:
They offer the same durability as molded tires but are lighter, which means they use less energy and reduce drivetrain wear.
Solid OTR tires are available on original OEM wheels, which is a major benefit if you need to switch between pneumatic and solid tires.
Also, if you auction off your equipment at the end of its life cycle, you can get a better value because you don't have to invest in another set of wheels. Likewise, you can reuse the wheel after the tire wears out.
Molded tires are tires in which the wheel is bonded to rubber. Mold-On OTR tires have some major advantages and disadvantages:
Tires will usually be heavier because the rubber compound will be harder, ensuring a tight bond between the steel and the rubber. On the downside, this will result in increased drivetrain wear and less energy savings - important if you have carbon restrictions.
All Solid OTR manufacturers have a workmanship warranty that covers wheel slippage on the tire. Wheel slip on Mold-On solid tires is rare because the wheel and tire are tightly coupled. However, the downside of this design is that you can't reuse the wheel when the rubber wears out. Also, if you auction off your equipment at the end of its useful life, you will have to invest in a new set of wheels, which can be very expensive. You also don't have the option to use pneumatic tires if the device needs to be repurposed for a lighter application.
